The series is widely recognized as being the first to introduce large-scale military battlefields in a game. The main series games are comprised of two interdependent maps the Campaign Map, which combines a Risk-style playing field with real-time strategy elements, and the Battle Map which allows players to conduct military engagements, using as an asset their Campaign Map abilities.
Creative Assembly has partnered with various publishers over the life of the series, the latest titles including Total War: Three Kingdoms being released by Sega. The series boasts eleven major instalments, each with a number of additional expansion packs, and a thriving modding community. Total War is a video game series developed exclusively by The Creative Assembly.
